Is dark energy changing?

A consequential question whose answer depends on observations and models.

What the evidence says

Each claim has a specific scope. A source can support an observation while leaving its interpretation open.

  1. InterpretationTentative

DESI DR2 analyses of the first three years, combined with CMB and supernova data under a two-parameter dark-energy model, strengthened the reported preference for evolving dark energy.[1][2]

Scope: Specified dataset combinations and the w0–wa model; results depend on supernova sample and cosmological assumptions.

Limit: DESI BAO alone is consistent with Lambda-CDM and does not show a strong preference for evolution. Combined-data preferences are not a settled discovery; unknown systematics and modeling choices remain relevant. No data analysis was reproduced.

  2. Reported observationSupported within stated scope

The separate public DESI Data Release 1 announcement reported information on 18.7 million galaxies, quasars and stars, covering the first 13 months of the main survey plus survey-validation data.[3]

Scope: DESI DR1 public release announced 19 March 2025; distinct from the three-year DR2 cosmology analysis.

Limit: This is a release-description claim; dataset download, completeness and downstream updates were not tested.

The next useful question

How sensitive is the result to model choices and independent datasets?
